Increasing Market Share: Liverpool SuperPort

investsefton: Maximising Supply Chain Opportunities for Local Businesses

The port of Liverpool is the UK’s major gateway for trade with the United States and Canada, serving over 100 global destinations. The port makes a significant contribution to the Liverpool City Region business economy, with an estimated 1000 limited companies working in the maritime sector in Merseyside, employing 26,000 staff.

Liverpool SuperPort is a major private sector-led development by Peel Ports, involving local authorities, business agencies, Liverpool Vision and the Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP). The SuperPort will integrate the strengths of the ports, airport and freight communities, into a more effective and cost-efficient environment for freight cargo logistics and passenger transit within the Liverpool City Region. Major infrastructure projects associated with the development include a deep water in-river container terminal at Seaforth, MerseyGateway Bridge, and the expansion of Liverpool John Lennon Airport.

An estimated 21,000 new jobs and £6billion additional GVA are expected to be created by the SuperPort, to 2020. The TMP SuperPort Action Plan sets out an operational programme to maximise opportunities for existing and new supply chains from the development. This includes engaging, and working with stakeholders, including exporters, carriers, manufacturers and retailers.

In support of this, investsefton is working with key stakeholders including PeelPorts, Liverpool Vision and the LEP, to develop a package of business support to up-skill businesses, and raise awareness of the opportunities available. This includes an investsefton ‘Exporting for Growth’ programme for new and existing exporters in Sefton.
