New guidance for the construction sector

New health and safety guidance has been published by the Construction Industry Advisory Committee (CONIAC) Health Risks Working Group, to encourage better management of occupational health risks within the sector.

Figures from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) reveal that 100 people per week die from construction-related ill health in the UK. HSE figures also reveal that construction workers are 100 times more likely to die from an occupational disease than they are from a fatal accident.

CONIAC believe that these figures demonstrate a lack of understanding of occupational health risks throughout the industry, and that compliance with the new guidance will lower the number of occupational ill health incidences throughout the industry.
