Major construction development is now well under way on Merseyside and Build Sefton intends to take advantage of the £3 to £8 billion pounds of spend to benefit the Boroughs’ local businesses and residents.

The core objective of Build Sefton is to access as much of the multi £ million of construction spend that will occur in Sefton between now and 2007. Build Sefton is set up as a mechanism for linking public sector and other construction programmes to developing local business competitiveness while delivering on the promise of ‘real jobs for local people’.

The project will focus on:

New contractors/developers sourcing additional local business
Local contractors/suppliers winning additional business
Total jobs created and the proportion from targeted regeneration areas
New sources of labour supply
Young people
People on inactive benefits
The self-employed

Build Sefton will also examine and influence strategic funding for construction training and research into local employers’ requirements liaising with Construction for Merseyside, Learning and Skills Council, Construction Industries Training Board and SummitSkills. In the long-term moving towards more responsive and employer-friendly provision.

Critical to successful delivery will be the outputs addressed by Seftons’ local sector skills agreements. The Build Sefton monitoring role is both integral and key to the project delivery and the assessment of businesses performance related to the final economic impact of developers and main contractors.
