The role of Construction Business Support takes into account support activities already in place for the Construction Industry but aims to identify gaps where further action is required.

Construction Business Support

Build Sefton will focus initially in three specific areas:

1. Local contractors and sub-contractors are not winning their share of major contracts, and there is little help for them to improve

2. Lead Developers/Contractors are sourcing suppliers, skills and goods from outside the area, unaware of local employment and procurement opportunities

3. There is a chronic skills shortage in the industry, and yet there are:

people currently not seeking work
women deterred from entering a largely male working environment
those who cannot get a first job
those who are at school but are not motivated by working in the Construction Industry

The Construction Business Support role will be addressing issues around:

Identification of businesses that could benefit from working with Build Sefton
Promoting the tender notification and feedback service to local companies
Developing tailored support packages drawing on Sefton MBC Business Support Team, Business Link and other appropriate support agencies
Obtaining the financial committment of key stakeholders to Build Sefton and our partners
Engaging with Senior Managers in Construction/Development companies
Developing an enabling service between incoming procurement managers and local builders and suppliers
Providing an ongoing relationship management/mentoring service to local builders and suppliers
Stimulating the formation of new builders/suppliers consortia, and to formalise 'grey economy' activity, where there are recognised capacity gaps
